Stateroom Footage is something I always check prior to booking a cruise so it seemed like a good idea to share the data I've compiled over time on an excel spreadsheet. I have found it handy to have and have revised it as needed.
The above photo is the Norwegian Jade. You will see numerous photos of the Jade on this site because the Norwegian Jade is one of my favorite ships. There are newer and bigger ships, ships with more footage, ships with more and larger balconies, and ships with more exciting sports challenges or more varied entertainment calendars, but........
...... the Norwegian Jade is our lucky ship. Yes, our first cruise on the Jade we won several bingo games that covered the cost of all of our excursions...on our third trip on the Jade we won a free cruise for two to the Caribbean. We traded that up to a Mediterranean cruise that returned us to Venice and Rome, two of our favorite ports. So, we will continue to watch for the Jade's itinerary to change to locations that we haven't already visited...then we'll enjoy being aboard again.
There are many variable names for cruise accommodations. Some call a Balcony stateroom a Verandah stateroom, while some call it a Deluxe Ocean View Suite with a balcony. When it comes to stateroom footage that also entails many variables. Amenities such as getting a bath tub or a shower are typically structured to the stateroom pricing classification.
To simplify matters, I've listed the most common sized staterooms. Some balcony staterooms give the total stateroom footage which includes the balcony while others listed theirs separately. Some stated that they had bath tubs. If they did provide that information then it is shown as +T (Many staterooms mini-suite size and larger have a bathtub but if it isn't specifically listed by the cruise line there will be no +T so check prior to booking)
An example:
Balcony stateroom (combined footage) with a bath tub= 170+T
Variable sized balcony staterooms with a tub = (170-235)+T
Balcony stateroom, balcony listed separately with tub = 170+30+T
Variable sized balcony staterooms without a tub = 170-235
Variable sized balcony rooms, variable sized balconies, plus tub= (170-135) +(30-85)+T
***PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SQUARE FOOTAGE TABLES ARE A BIT DIFFICULT TO READ BECAUSE THEY ARE SCREEN SHOTS OF MY EXCEL SPREADSHEET. CTRL + (plus) WILL EXPAND YOUR SCREEN AND CTRL - (minus) WILL RETURN THE SCREEN TO YOUR NORMAL SIZE.
Stateroom footage is so varied that this article is meant to give an overview of differences that should be considered when choosing both your cruise line and stateroom style. Of course there are other factors you will consider besides the square footage of your "floating hotel room" such as the amenities offered, the price, the cruise line's reputation regarding the cuisine, the ports of call for the cruise, etc. and those topics are partly covered on the Thinking about Cruising or Picking a Cruise pages. But, for this article we are dealing only with stateroom footage along with the ages of the ships.
The year the ship was built is listed as well as the year of any redo (refurbishment). During a ship renovation and upgrade, the size of the stateroom footage rarely change but the new enhancements can be things like the addition of internet access, décor changes to lobbies and dining rooms, upgrading bathrooms etc.
Cruise fares and their multi-leveled categories can vary for even inside rooms. For instance, an inside mid-ship stateroom is a category up from a regular inside stateroom the same as a porthole ocean view stateroom is a category down from an ocean view stateroom with a window and two categories down from a mid-ship ocean view with a window. There are also the obstructed ocean view windows that are another category.
An inside stateroom, a mid-ship inside stateroom, a family inside stateroom can all have the same stateroom footage but have differing fares because of location, deck level, and/or bed configurations. Balcony stateroom footage may remain the same but might be called an aft-facing balcony, family balcony, different deck levels, etc. with different fare categories.
An example of an older ship that was refurbished is the Norwegian Spirit which we have sailed on in the Mediterranean. It is seen below.
Stateroom Footage categories that are not included in the main classifications table:
